Thaipusam
February 11 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Significance and History
Thaipusam is a significant Hindu festival celebrated to honor Lord Murugan, the deity of courage, strength, and victory. It is observed on the full moon day in the Tamil month of Thai (January–February), which is when the star “Pusam” is at its brightest. This festival marks the occasion when Goddess Parvati gave her son, Lord Murugan, a divine spear (Vel) to vanquish the demon Surapadman, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
The festival holds deep spiritual meaning, as it is seen as an opportunity to cleanse oneself of sins, overcome challenges, and strengthen one’s faith. It is especially popular among the Tamil Hindu community.
Traditional Observances
Devotees undertake acts of devotion and penance during Thaipusam. These acts often include:
- Kavadi Attam (Burden Dance): Devotees carry elaborately decorated structures, known as kavadis, on their shoulders or heads as a form of devotion and penance.
- Body Piercing: Some devotees pierce their tongues, cheeks, or bodies with spears or hooks as an act of spiritual surrender and discipline.
- Processions: Many temples organize grand processions, with the idol of Lord Murugan carried on a chariot accompanied by music and chants of “Vel Vel Muruga!”
- Fasting and Pilgrimage: Devotees often fast, follow a vegetarian diet, and walk barefoot to the temple as a sign of humility and devotion.
The festival is vibrant and filled with rituals that symbolize surrender to the divine and the quest for spiritual growth.
