Vaisakhi / Baisakhi / Vishu
April 14 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Significance and History
Vaisakhi, also known as Baisakhi, is a major harvest festival celebrated in Northern India, especially in Punjab and Haryana, and marks the beginning of the harvest season. It is also the Punjabi New Year and holds religious significance for Sikhs, as it commemorates the founding of the Khalsa Panth by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699.
In South India, Vishu is celebrated as the Malayali New Year in Kerala and marks the beginning of the zodiac calendar. It is a day to celebrate prosperity, renewal, and hope for the year ahead.
Both festivals are joyous occasions filled with gratitude for nature’s bounty and devotion to the divine. Vaisakhi emphasizes community, while Vishu focuses on individual prosperity and renewal.
Traditional Observances for Vaisakhi / Baisakhi
- Temple Visits and Prayers: Devotees visit Gurudwaras and temples to offer prayers and thank the divine for a successful harvest.
- Nagar Kirtans: Sikh devotees organize colorful processions called Nagar Kirtans, featuring singing of hymns and martial arts displays.
- Fairs and Celebrations: Fairs and festivals with music, dance (like Bhangra), and traditional food are common.
- Langar Service: Free community meals are served in Gurudwaras as a symbol of equality and service.
